Laboratory Chemistries
The basic chemistry tests offered in most laboratories are the BMP (basic metabolic panel), CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel), Liver or Hepatic Function panel, Toxic Drug Screen, Lipid panel, and a few enzymes, drugs, medications, or other chemical compounds such as ammonia. The metabolic panels always include electrolytes, glucose, BUN (blood urea nitrogen), and creatinine. They may also contain calcium, AST (aspartate transaminase), ALT (alanine transaminase), ALP (alkaline phosphatase), total protein, and total bilirubin. In addition, the Liver Function panel may contain direct bilirubin and albumin. This module will present each of these tests in a manner that will link laboratory results and clinical applications together in order to help the health care provider evaluate a patient’s condition. The information is not intended to diagnose a condition, but to explain the significance of the different parameters of the CMR.
