Following the events of September 11th, 2001, the most serious terrorist attack ever perpetrated within the United States, several states began programs to ensure their nurses received education designed to make them as ready as possible to deal with such acts. In 2003, the state of Nevada passed Assembly Bill 250. This law required nurses and several other groups of healthcare professionals take a four-hour continuing education course “relating to the medical consequences of an act of terrorism that involves the use of a weapon of mass destruction.”
These requirements became part of the Nevada Nurse Practice Act (NRS 632.343 (3) which specified that after January 1, 2005, nurses renewing their licenses would be required to complete this (one time) four-hour course. At each nursing license renewal, they are then asked to swear that they have completed this course and have retained their Bioterrorism CE certificate indefinitely. This course will address those medical consequences.
