Its Ringing: An Overview of Tinnitus
Tinnitus affects more than 45 million adults in the United States (1). Tinnitus is one of the most common complaints of patients with otologic disorders, especially disorders involving the inner ear (2). People who have it describe it as a ringing, hissing, buzzing, roaring, whistling, shhhhhing noise in the absence of an external acoustic stimulus. It is a sound that comes from a source that is not external to the body. The sound may be heard in one or both ears depending on the cause and for many, the condition is severe enough to significantly alter their life.
