Learning Objectives
Identify medical nutrition therapy goals for diabetes management for people at risk for diabetes and those who already have diabetes. State the primary strategy for achieving the goals of MNT for persons with type 1 diabetes. Describe nutrition recommendations and principles regarding: calories, protein, fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, sweeteners, fiber, sodium, alcohol, and vitamins and minerals. Discuss guidelines for the use of fiber, protein, fat, vitamins & minerals, and alcoholic beverages for persons with diabetes. Define MNT and discuss the nutrition counseling component of MNT. List 2 nutrition-related strategies for achieving the goals of MNT for persons with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Describe the role of carbohydrate in food/meal planning for persons with diabetes. Discuss the steps involved in the process of providing MNT.
