  • Identify medical nutrition therapy goals for diabetes management for people at risk for diabetes and those who already have diabetes.

  • State the primary strategy for achieving the goals of MNT for persons with type 1 diabetes.

  • Describe nutrition recommendations and principles regarding: calories, protein, fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, sweeteners, fiber, sodium, alcohol, and vitamins and minerals.

  • Discuss guidelines for the use of fiber, protein, fat, vitamins & minerals, and alcoholic beverages for persons with diabetes.

  • Define MNT and discuss the nutrition counseling component of MNT.

  • List 2 nutrition-related strategies for achieving the goals of MNT for persons with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

  • Describe the role of carbohydrate in food/meal planning for persons with diabetes.

  • Discuss the steps involved in the process of providing MNT.
