The goal of this course is to provide the professional nurse with an increased understanding of the mechanisms, indications, complications, and contraindications of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) usage. Emphasis of this course will be placed on the nursing management and control of an IABP; nursing assessment of the patient with an IABP; and understanding IABP laboratory tests required for the patient receiving IABP therapy. Additionally, nursing care of the patient with an IABP and documentation of nursing care are provided. Potential complications associated with IABP use, and an understanding of patient safety and patient education for those patients receiving therapy with an IABP is included.
