The goal of this course is to instruct the professional nurse in afflictions commonly known as neck and back pain. This course will describe the anatomy of the spinal column and the many different causes of neck and back pain in relationship to the abnormalities of the spine that may occur due to stress and degeneration. Other causes of back pain, such as that experienced due to muscle, ligament, and tendon stress or injury will be discussed. Risk factors for such painful occurrences will be discussed as well as treatment modalities, including surgical procedures. Tips to prevent neck and back pain which may lessen the impact of pain on the individual and decrease the pain that is placed on the general population in terms of socio-economic demands will also be included in this discussion.
