Substance misuse is prevalent in our society and costs the healthcare industry billions of dollars each year. It negatively impacts those struggling with misusing substances in several areas including interpersonal, occupational, and daily functioning. The negative impact is often exacerbated if one is also diagnosed with a co-occurring mental health disorder. While co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders frequently interact with the healthcare system, nurses tend to have limited education and training on treating such individuals. Moreover, negative attitudes exist among nurses and other healthcare providers related to such individuals. These factors have the potential to interfere with patient care. This course will explore many facets of substance use disorders and mental health disorders that commonly co-occur, including posttraumatic stress disorder, mood disorders, and Schizophrenia. Additionally, psychosocial problems associated with co-occurring disorders and treatment recommendations will be discussed.
