The purpose of this course is to provide a basic overview of hospice services and qualifications for nurses and other medical professionals to empower them to further their interest in hospice with the hope of providing patients with a more holistic health care experience and quality end-of-life care. Hospice regulations will be discussed along with an explanation of the four hospice levels of care and an overview of the nurse’s role in hospice. The differences between home hospice and inpatient hospice care will also be examined. Ethical tenets will be applied to the hospice environment as well as the impact of chronic illness on the patient and family and, finally, suggestions on methods to instill a sense of hope surrounding the hospice patient will be discussed.
